Notting Hill in London has become a fashionable neighborhood and one that the residents are proud of. One of its famous landmarks is the Books for Cooks bookstore where more than 8,000 titles are available. Founded in 1983 by Heidi Lascelles, the current owners are Rosie Kindersley and French chef, Eric Treville. The business is so much more than a store and the owners and staff provide a service that goes beyond selling books. Customers enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and friendly welcome. They can browse the books whilst sitting on a sofa and take a break in the café at the rear of the shop.
Since 1995, the store has hosted cookery classes and workshops in the Books for Cooks demonstration kitchen. One of the teachers is co-proprietor Eric Treville and he is joined by talented cooks from Japan, Italy, the USA, the Lebanon, India and England. Some of these cooks are also respected food writers. Participants on the courses receive a recipe booklet pertaining to dishes on the course, a glass of wine and lunch or supper. The classes cover a wide range of subjects and the most popular ones are presented on a regular basis. Books for Cooks courses include cuisine from different countries, cooking techniques, how to entertain and cooking for Christmas.
The books on the shelves are not confined to recipe books and there are also titles on the history of food, food themed biographies, nutrition and art, sociology and chemistry books relating to food. Fiction with food as a subject is also available. Customers also enjoy the gourmet posters and cards. For anyone not in the London district, they can still obtain Books for Cooks stock. The menu for the café changes every day and dishes are prepared with fresh produce from the nearby Portobello Market, a famous tourist attraction in the capital. Once you step into the "real world," you soon realize how difficult it can be to acquire a job. Notice that I didn't say find a job. For some bizarre reason I thought I could enter the work-force with guns blazing. There was no stopping me, for I was college degree man. That certificate was going to get me a stellar career. Newspapers are not obsolete sources, but they're seriously limited. Online you'll have access to a much broader area. Basically the entire planet. That certainly beats your local city. Investing money while in college is not a priority for people. After all, most folks are busy just trying to keep up with tuition payments and general cost-of-living expenses. Nonetheless, investing in college is possible. I know – I was one of the first people in my school to do it.
I was pretty inspired by some of the economics courses I was taking. I was learning all the investing basics I would need to know to get started, and I suppose I thought I was smarter than I really was. I was interested in all of it – real estate investing, currency speculation, futures – pretty much anything I could read about. I assumed that I would get rich overnight. I was a smart kid who thought I was a genius.
There were definitely a few unexpected lessons for me. Some of the investments I made were not very prudent, and I definitely lost a little bit of money before I made and it. Nonetheless, I learned quickly. I knew that investing money while in college was a difficult and dicey proposition, and I learned to budget appropriately. Soon, I was definitely starting to take in some cash.
When I told my economics professors that I was investing money while in college, they were understandably impressed. They were skeptical at first, but once I explained and showed them my investment strategies and how they were starting to pay off, they could see that I was taking my lessons to heart. One of them actually even took a few investment tips from me. It was a great time for me, as I was enjoying the respect of my peers, my professors, and my good friends. I even thought about majoring in economics for a while.
Eventually, it got a little bit too stressful. Although I had enjoyed investing money while in college, I needed to concentrate more on my work. I made the decision that I would give up my short-term investments for the next couple of years, and put the long-term ones in stable funds. That way, I wouldn't have to worry as much about them. I did not end up majoring in economics, choosing instead to complete a course in history. As soon as I finished college, however, I definitely started up a healthy sideline in investing again. I do not take in a huge amount of money, but it is a great supplementary income. Life has been good to me so far.

Learning About Music Copyright Law
So who doesn't want to get their songs played on the radio? And who doesn't want to win a Grammy award someday for best original song, or best album, or best new artist for that matter? But for those of us brand-new in this business, there's just a whole lot to learn about music copyright law. Since the first writing I did was just penning new tunes to two- and three-hundred year old hymns at church, I didn't really have much to worry about. I was using lyrics that were public domain (sort of like "Happy Birthday" -- when it's public domain, you can sing someone else's tunes or lyrics without winding up in jail), so I didn't have to worry about protected rights. Using these types of songs and lyrics is the way to go for beginners, but I've advanced beyond that point now. I'm trying to write my own stuff, and I don't want someone else getting credit for it, which is why I needed to find out how music copyright law works.
Music copyright law protects composers, publishers, and arrangers from having their work stolen or tampered with in any way. In essence, United States music copyright law guarantees that the creator/owner of the original material has the exclusive rights to that material as long as they're alive, plus 50 years! For songs written before 1978, the decided-on time frame is 75 years. That way, the creative folks that penned their own songs and lyrics get all the credit for them, as well as any monetary gain from their sale or broadcast. It's a pretty terrific system, if you ask me.
The best way to protect what you've written, what some call your "intellectual property," is to register what your songs or lyrics with the appropriate government agency. A good attorney is really worth your time in this regard, even if it's just in the capacity of advising you on how and where to start. Internet Addiction
Is there such a phenomenon as internet addiction?
Strange as it may sound, it's true. The internet, with millions upon millions of sites to see, can easily become an alternate reality. One link leads to another and before you know it, hours have passed. You may have started out your net session with some serious purpose, researching a health topic or locating information for a term paper.
You decide to take a short break to visit your favorite message board. You find a response to one of your posts from one of your online friends. The response really gets your dander up, so you fire off a quick response. The responder is also online and shoots back with another message. Again, before you know it, dinner's burning and the kids are after you - "When's dinner?".
Does this situation qualify as internet addiction? If this scenario arises once in a blue moon, no. However, in most cases like this, it's a regular event. Once you're on the net, you find you've got to tear yourself away to tend to business. If surfing the net interferes with regular responsibilities, or keeps you up until the wee hours such that you can't get up in time for work, you've got the dreaded internet addiction.
So prevalent is this phenomenon, there are now institutions and support groups dedicated to curing this brand new addiction. You may be shocked to discover that people are paying money to be rehabilitated from their internet addiction.
If you suspect that you're creeping up to addictive status, or already there, how do you recognize the signature characteristics of internet addiction? What steps can you take on your own to wean yourself from excessive stints on the web?

Establish certain times of the day or evening when the net won't interfere with work and family responsibilities. Let's say you do housework for an hour in the morning and on Saturdays. Pencil that time into your calendar. Homework help is nightly, between 4:00 and 6:00 pm. Mark it down, along with all regular tasks. What's left is when you fit in net excursions.
Yes, it's all easier said than done. However, it's doable. Buck up. Get up an hour earlier than usual, or fore go your favorite TV program.
